Advertising space is set to grow in Toronto – and space for community information will shrink – due to a decision by the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee on June 13th. The committee voted to alter the design of Toronto’s InfoToGo Pillars to include 60% more advertising and 10-33% less community information.
Each pillar has a local neighbourhood map with areas of interest marked, including landmarks and transit routes. They were designed to serve communities and tourists by providing important area information to them.
Councilor Gord Perks (Parkdale-High Park) and Councilor Mike Layton (Trinity-Spadina) voted against the increase in ads.
Councilor Gord Perks noted that, “The new design decreases the city’s value and increases the advertisers’ value”.
It is estimated that the changes could bring the City $1.2 million in additional revenue but given the revenue sharing agreement it is hard to predict what will actually be realized.
